How Fast Should a Business Website Load?

October 5, 2026Websites & Local SEO

Speed is the least glamorous website topic and one of the most expensive to ignore. Here are the benchmarks that matter and what slow actually costs you.

The benchmarks

  • Under 2.5 seconds: good. Visitors stay, Google treats you fairly, mobile users convert normally.
  • 2.5 to 4 seconds: average. You are losing a measurable share of mobile visitors before they see your content.
  • Over 4 seconds: expensive. A large share of phone visitors, often half or more, bounce before your page renders.

Measure with PageSpeed Insights or the network tab of your browser's developer tools on a throttled connection. Your office wifi flatters your site; your customers' cell signal does not.

What slow costs

Every extra second of load time visibly drops conversions and page views. If your site converts 3 percent of visitors and slowness cuts traffic quality so it converts 2 percent, you are losing a third of your website's output to something completely fixable. On $300,000 of website-attributed revenue, that is $100,000 a year. The conversion side of this math is in Why Your Business Website Isn't Generating Leads.

What makes sites slow

In order of how often we see them:

  1. Enormous images. A 6MB photo from a phone, uploaded straight to the homepage, is the single most common cause. Properly compressed images look identical and load in a fraction of the time.
  2. Heavy page builders. Themes loading dozens of scripts and styles for features you never use.
  3. Third-party embeds. Chat widgets, trackers, and fonts stacking up blocking requests.
  4. Cheap hosting. Shared hosting on an overloaded server adds latency to everything.

The fixes that matter

  • Compress and resize every image before upload (this alone often cuts load time in half)
  • Lazy-load anything below the fold
  • Audit and remove unused plugins and scripts
  • Pick hosting that fits your traffic rather than the cheapest plan
  • Set a rule going forward: every new image gets compressed, no exceptions

A focused speed pass on a typical small business site costs a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars and often cuts load time by half or more. It is usually the highest-return website work available, which is why our free website audit scores it prominently.

The right target

Do not chase a perfect 100 score chasing vanity metrics. Get your real-world load under 2.5 seconds on a phone, verify it on your own device over cell data, and move on to the things that convert visitors, walks through it in [ How to Build a Website That Generates Leads.
