Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google

October 5, 2026Websites & Local SEO

You search for what you sell, plus your town, and you are not there. Competitors you know you beat on quality are. Here are the reasons, roughly in order of how often they are the cause.

1. No Google Business Profile, or an unclaimed one

For local searches, the map pack (the three businesses with the map) gets a large share of clicks and calls. No claimed, complete Google Business Profile means you are not in it. Fix: claim the profile, fill everything out completely, choose accurate categories, add photos, and get reviews arriving steadily. This is the single highest-value local fix there is.

2. Your site does not say what you do, where

Google reads your pages. If "services" is a vague list and your town appears only in the footer, Google has little to match against "deck builder Clemmons." Fix: real pages per service, with your service areas named in the content, walks through it in [ How Local SEO and Website Design Work Together.

3. Inconsistent business information

Your name, address, and phone number differ across the web: an old address on one directory, a different phone on another. Google loses confidence. Fix: one consistent version of your details everywhere you appear.

4. No reviews, or no recent ones

Review volume, velocity, and your responses are ranking signals and trust signals. A competitor with 80 recent reviews beats you with a better site, fairly or not. Fix: a systematic ask after every completed job, automated, the full walkthrough is in [ 10 Business Processes You Should Automate Before Hiring Another Employee.

5. A slow or technically broken site

If your site is slow or Google cannot crawl it properly, rankings suffer everywhere. Benchmarks in How Fast Should a Business Website Load?

6. Your site is new, or thin

Rankings take months to build. A 5-page site from 2019 with no new content has nothing to rank with. Fix: steady, useful content aimed at what local customers search. The strategy is in How to Get Your Website to Rank on Google and Build Real Search Authority.

7. You are checking the wrong thing

Searching from your office skews results by location and history. Check from an incognito window in your actual service area, or use proper rank tracking. Many "we're invisible" reports are measurement errors.

What not to do

Buy backlinks from a stranger on the internet, keyword-stuff your pages, or expect results in two weeks. Local SEO is months of steady, correct work, and it compounds. The cost picture is in How Much Does Local SEO Cost for a Small Business?
